Remember seeing Russell play a few times for Elphs youth team and he always was a great talent. Don't believe he did appear for the firsts or if he did it was just a couple from the bench (The incumbent manager didn't promote the youth policy). I think he left at the end of the season for Wycombe. Always good to see local talent progress.
Please note I mentioned Sussex based players, not necessarily born/bred. I realise that at this level keen footballers are always willing to travel a couple of hours and back again just for training.
As for local teams producing sides with mainly Sussex based players, our neighbours by the seas¡de have done quite well over the last few years.

Surely, from Brighton to Lewes is a step up. Is Russell going to help us choose our next manager?

And surely, if you'd rather watch West Ham play BHU at the Amex than Lewes playing Hendon at the Pan then you shouldn't be wasting your time posting messages on this website, you should be looking for a flat near Upton Park or maybe a caravan on Canvey Island. Incidentally, will the Lewes vs Met Police match induce a bigger police presence than arrived for the Newport game?

This thought popped into mind earlier, and this is REALLY looking into the future, but one thing that would slightly worry me IF SK was to make a return is where would we be in 3 or 4 years time? We all want a successful team, but just suppose a near miracle happened and he did it all again and got us back to the top end of BSS? Do we really want that? Would we want to sample the part-time club killing ground that is BSP again? Could we afford it? Would we even get in that league again as I think ground grading would be an issue again? Personally I don't fancy it. He's done it a few times now and who is to say he wouldn't do it again. Even with a very tight budget. Whatever one thinks of the bloke he is a very successful manager. Maybe simply TOO successful for Lewes?

Would be surprised if sk even applied. As far as bsp is concerned I guess a budget of around 750000+ would be needed players travel ground improvements etc so might take us a year or too and most of us would have to pay more then the minimum £30 for our share.

the mention of the mets police team reminds me of a conversation i recently had with a friend who knows things...he reminded me that the news of the world were financial backers and there were several very close conections between the two. due to present political circumstances, there may be a reduction in the newspapers backing and so watch what happens.

Maybe simply TOO successful for Lewes? That's the one fear re the board's thinking. They must also recognise that scenario, and the hope is they'd have enough confidence in their own strength of mind to go down the SK route – if that's available – but be prepared to say no to a too-speedy run of promotions in the event of that giddy possibility becoming reality. In other words, rather than take the 'nervous' route of appointing someone who'd make us a half-reasonable team (with luck), I'd hope they'd go for the best option available and cope with success when it came. I don't think the fans want to buy into second-best.

just why would anyone else apart from sk be called seconed best. your logic is flawed. and why would a prudent board instruct a manager...dont win...dont get promoted... in the whole history of football, the only club who continue to stand still is boggy. that suits jack. thats why most of their fans hate him. whoever the new manager is, he will be aiming for the highest number of points, the longest cup runs and good football. as for your previous post regarding '' the majority'' of fans... i posted my choice, a new man with no baggage. you intimated that i wasn't helping his cause. i stayed quiet. you have constantly posted about sk. i dont think your helping your false messiah.

Scenario....
Employ a full time manager, promotion or play off gained first season.... do we say wait a moment we don't want it? Okay we take promotion and the following season we again end up in a promotion or play off position. Do we then say, oh no wait, don't want it can't afford it?
I remember this before and the furore from the 'fans' who bitched when we couldn't take part because of ground regs. Imagine the backlash when regs don't apply but because of expense the BoD decide against it.
I have said for years Ryman Premier/BSS is the highest this club could realistically expect without putting the clubs existence in jeopardy. As PJ puts in regarding the division in BSP.... full time against part time. As an example how can Lewes compete against clubs like Grimsby Town playing budget 900,000 and Youth budget 250,000.
There should be no rush. A consolidation financially and on the playing side with a gradual improvement in both areas with a possibility of promotion, though the real pay off is and always will be a good FA Cup run.
Spur.. there is no way SK will accept a no answer as shown from experience... seems even a few on here are sharing the same doubt regarding the re-employment of SK.

You evidently missed it! But read back through recent posts . . . Maths not your strongest skill, maybe? 48 votes, 15 for SK. Nearly a 'vast majority', but not quite... You're not a Lib-Dem, by any chance? 48 votes out of 480 fans* so less than 10% voted. If they voted the same way it would have been 150/480. Less than 32% ;D * to make the maths easier.

Where have you been, Foulkesy?! Welcome back. And we all know how online polls can be rigged. Just talk to the people around you in the ground and around the town.
But, hey – all the guessing will soon be over. I reckon we've had a pretty civilised debate, all things considered . . .

so who will it be? does anyone have any insider knowledge as to who the new manager will be. Also who out of the players from last season will still be here when we all kick off again?

Fair points but the moment you are perceived as not wanting promotion then you start to struggle with support and players etc. Few players, managers and supporters want to follow a team marking time and not wanting to better themselves. On the positive side we are not the only club in this position and we have at least 2 years to make a plan for how to handle the off field as well as on field stuff. If I was an ambitious manager looking to take the Lewes role you would bet these are the questions I would be asking.

i dont think any manager or player would want to settle for a club wanting nothing other then stability. managers and players alike want to win. hopefully a strong minded manager who can work on a shoe string budget and bring success will be employed.
best we can do is get ourselves back into bss as soon as possible. then slowly but surely build up speed. maybe a cup run or two to help with income. and then try get ourselves in a position to go into the bsp and maybe have a better show then last time

But, hey – all the guessing will soon be over. I reckon we've had a pretty civilised debate, all things considered . . . I have been reading the forum on my lunch breaks, but don't get time to post. I have been here in spirit. I agree that Sk is the most popular choice, but how many would have voted from him when JQ left? I just don't think that dismissing the other 24 is right and we don't even know who they are. I think John Crumplin was the most wanted, but the board went for Steve King. If they went with the "Fans Choice" back then, it would be Steve who? It depends on who you talk to around town. I know people that use to go the pan, but stopped when Mr King started using non local players. Yes, I would be happy for the return of the Messiah and believe he could bring success. I think the Club is far greater than any Manager. That is the northern in me. People that don't come anymore beacause the way he was treated baffles me. The board that got rid of him hasn't been there this season. So why didn't the few stayaways come back? I think the attendances from last season are higher and the 2006-07 when we finished mid-table. I am looking forward to next season and it does not matter to me who is incharge, as long as the care about the club, fans and community

Sin my opinionn makes a very good point.A lack of ambition shown by the club would deter many potentially 'good managers' and players. We not only need to choose the right manager but we have to virtually rebuild a complete squad. Most successful players at any level have to have a goal to aim for and just survival would not be enough to attract them to Lewes. Let us not also forget that there is a big club not 4 miles down the road(i cannot bring myself to mention the name) who i am sure would 'steal' many of the floating fans if we endured another lacklustre season. Guiam....Not Cullip and/or Butters........PLEASE!!!!! D'ont think the budget would stretch that far.We hardly got value for money last time....

inviting Cullip and /or butters back would be a disservice to the club as there last stint wasnt exactly beneficial. the only people who saw any action from those two were ST Johns ambulance

i am aware of this i was meerly putting thoughts to the forum. do either of them have any managerial experience? have any of them worked to a tight budget? and how much would they cost the club? for these reasons im a bit sceptical. though cullip has helped coach before at clubs but there is a big step up to management
