Sadly I have been told he has joined Staines
I hope this is misinformation, a lie, idle gossip.
If true a real shame that during his tenure at the club it was through 3 very grotty years and he has gone now we look to be very much on the up. It would have been great seeing him play in a decent side. Anyway best of luck to him, a true Lewes FC legend and all round good egg

Would it help if I offered to go and pick him up and take him home every game?

I heard this last night. It's a bit more than a rumour. Staines is very close to his uni and he is fed up with all the travelling back to Lewes as he doesn't drive.
It looks like it's true, but let's wait and see as I hear efforts are being made to keep hold.

I guess its not so much the expense but the pain in the arse it is to get to and from Lewes from Uni.

He's gone:
From the main site.
David Wheeler has left Lewes FC to remain in Blue Square Bet South with Staines Town. The winger who has been at the Dripping Pan since he was 16, found the travelling difficult last season from his University in West London and has opted for a club which is nearer to his new base, having signed this afternoon. The news will come as a major disappointment to Lewes supporters for whom Wheeler was a huge favourite. He made his Blue Square Premier debut as a substitute against Torquay United in November 2008, winning the Man of the Match award in his home league debut the following game against Grays Athletic. The Lewes youngster made the England Schoolboys squad in 2008 and played against France in an invitation match at Wembley, having made his competitive debut for his country at Boston against Wales a few weeks earlier. The Lewes Board of Directors, who were particularly saddened to see Wheeler leave said: "The manager and club have been very keen to hold on to David. He is a special player and much loved by all the fans." "But David has decided that the travelling distance, sometimes three times a week, is too much to fit in with his University course and has opted for a more local option in Staines Town." "We are very sad to see him go, but we wish him every success in his studies and at his new club. He goes with our absolute best wishes."
Understandable but gutting. I only hope we will see him back in a Lewes shirt when he has finished Uni.

sad to see him go, but if he has moved clubs just to be able to do uni then obviously he see's a career for himself outside of football

Very sad news for Lewes. Don't get me wrong I wish Wheeler good luck but it makes it more gutting that we have lost such a bright, young sussex talent for no reward. Good luck Wheeler I know Lewes is in your heart and like already said I sincerely hope to see you back in a Lewes shirt once Uni is over with.

Many thanks to David for all the pleasure he's given us over the past few seasons. Who knows, we might we have kept him had we stayed up, but the attractions of a local club in BSS are obvious. Let's hope SK is scouting around for a replacement with his usual aplomb . . .

Farewell to the one and only David Wheeler.
For much of the past few years, he has been one of the only players I've been proud to see in a Lewes shirt.

2 season ago him and Keehan kept us up.
This season he was the only player who i thought could keep us up.
Fantastic player it is such a shame to see him leave i really hope he can use Staines as a stepping stone up the football ladder.
Farewell Dave for now

After all the good news this brings us back to reality with a bump. Such a shame, but good luck David, you have given us much pleasure. I bet Steve King can't believe it, he has always wanted Wheeler in one of his teams and just when it looked like it was going to happen.... Never mind, lets stay positive, you never know what bright talent will be next to wear the number 7 shirt.

I look at it this way. Dave is only "on loan". He is a Lewes boy through and through, and, especially if we can get back to BSS, he will be seen in the red and black again sooner rather than later.
