I am afraid a lot of the players we have had over the past two seasons were probably not good enough even for Ryman Premier - not to fault most of them for their efforts though. It is a shame there will be little continuity and that the gap between u18 and first team football is so large as it is hard to keep connected to a rolling bunch of players with little connection to the town.
On the players we "had" - although i assume most of them are out of contract so in effect Steve King started off with no players - I would rate them as follows and I would have signed 3 at most - with Wheeler and Hamilton the only definites:
1) Wheeler - Conference South level at least - great if he could sign as he is local and developing. Can he reach higher than that - this season will be the test if he can shine then a bigger team might sign him (for a fee!!!!!)
2) Hamilton - Conference South level at least - fast and experienced and still not too old - I would sign him!
3) Walder - Ryman Premier level - if fit I would have signed him but hard to judge his form and still young.
4) Barness - Ryman Premier level - even at his age (!) I think he is good enough for this level and if you have a core squad of 16 then as a sub he can come on across the back.
5) Pearson - Ryman South level - like Barness a good squad player across the back. Marginal signing.
6) Breach - Ryman South level - I just think he lacks pace, might be a fitness issue - superb in the air though. Marginal signing.
7) Winterton - Ryman South level - which is where he has gone. he might get stronger as still young. I wouldn't have signed.
8) Ide - Unsure - like Walder hard to judge after a long injury so wouldn't have signed.
I cannot see anyone seriously putting a case forward for anyone else in the team for this level - Jermaine Wright could clearly play at this level but has retired and lacked pace; Joe Dolan - was only on loan but I thought he was the best centre back we had all season when he was focused; Danny Buckle - what can i say, so close to being a Lewes legend with the overhead kick etc - one of the strangest players i have ever seen - unfit awkward messy and yet made more chances in ten minutes each game he played than the other fowards had all game - I've got as much chance of being signed by Steve King as him though!
Now that's just me watching from the side - Steve King watches 150 games a year and knows what he is doing and I am sure he has seen all our players along with many others - that's the brutal truth. As far as I am aware NONE of the old players has signed.
I hope most of the old squad were thanked for their efforts - now we move on.

Walder would have been a good player at this level and if fit I would like to have seen him stay. However I don't think it's the massive loss some think. Give me a fit Kenno over him any day. I bet Kingy finds someone at least as good.

Also, Pearson was approached before the appointment of SK but in his words 'I doubt I'll be going back there now'

I think Breach and Winterton are easily Ryman Premier standard, you won't find many better centeral defenders than Breachy especially in there and Nickyboi has said that he read Kingy wants to keep Wheeler, Hamilton, Breach and Barness. Pearson hasn't played enough this season so with King needing to narrow down the squad it is understandable that Pearson would go as he hasn't been first team in a squad that got relegated so from a onlooker it would look like he is not good enough especially as King wants a small squad and he has signed Robinson, Hustwick and wants to keep Breach.

We were only relegated by a few points, to say that only two players in the squad were up to conference south standard is a bit off the mark. If that were the case we would have finished as badly as we did in the Conf Prem!
Breach and Winterton were certainly of conference south level, to say they are both only ryman south quality i find a bit odd. If Breach is only ryman south and Wheeler is conference south, then how come Breach was player of the season? I hope Breach does get signed, and I'm disappointed to see Winnie go, although I have no doubt King will bring in a quality keeper.
I would say Hill looked a canny player at times as well. And if Hunt had been given more game time, I think he would have shown he was cut out for conf prem.
With regard to Walder, if, as seems to be the case, we are having a small squad on a limited budget for the coming season, then I can clearly understand not keeping a player who has missed the entire last campaign through injury. All the best to Jack though.

Blimey, I thought I was the only one who thought that about Hill & Hunt!
I agree entirely, both weren't given the game time or a basic level of trust by TosH (Hunt in particular). I seem to remember Breach commenting that Hill "does some unbelievable things in training". Obviously games are completely different but I always thought he showed potential for good things.
I understand the point of those better qualified to say that the quality may not be there but I for one would like to see a few more local players not just those that have played under SK previously....

be good to understand how best to balance the squad on the budget....need a strong core which most of the budget will go on then possibly really good youth players and hopefully some good local players? Would have been nice to have the time to build a sustainable team and hopefully Sin my opinionn can put together some talented youth players who can be used at some point. Are the youth going to play the same way as the Men? Also nervous about a small squad and the prospect of loan players to help and how this impacts the budget and the lack of connection with the club?? Now that we are a Community Club.

We shouldn't confuse being a Community Club with the absolute need in Ryman Premier to have a competitive team playing entertaining football with passion and skill. Without the latter a Community Club can exist but cannot thrive. This was something greatly stressed by the Board at a meeting with Benefactors in the Elephant & Castle a couple of weeks ago. Even Corinthian Casuals (who were founded as a club of true unpaid amateurs playing for the love the game) want to win and take players from anywhere if they are willing to play without pay. But it's an unhappy fact that the Casuals these days rarely (if ever) excel in league or cup competitions and I believe the heady heights of Ryman Premier and certainly Blue Square South are way beyond their wildest aspirations.

pepper - we were bad - only St Albans finished below us and they had 10 pts deducted and a team fall apart.. There's playing in a division and there's being competitive and we were the former not the latter. The verdict on Breach by gammon is harsh though as I live in the same house sometimes I know gammon never stops saying how slow he is - think if he had a good defender next to him he would be fine and he is strong in the air at set pieces. I would say Breach is Ryman Premier standard. I think other than that he is probably right though apart from Barness - has he really go another season in him? Hope so. of the players he missed out - Hill and Hunt were OK and might look better in a better team but they were hardly long serving anyway. My own favourite was Murphy (top scorer)- it was said he didn't take direction well but he was the most dangerous forward we had for most of the season and was very entertaining!

It is certainly true that we were a poor team last season, but that does not mean that some individuals would not perform in a different context.
I think Wheeler and Walder are both effective players at BSS. Others needed to show that they could regularly meet the standard week in, not just occasionally.
Some players lack pace, some awareness, others just confidence. That is why they are at this level. Good management puts together a blend which works in combination, so if pace is a problem in a particular position there is a compensating quality alongside.
It does look like we are starting from the ground up again. So be it, if players leave I hope it is on good terms, and that they do not carry a grievance that they have been short changed. At the end of the day, we have to win some games, to get some feel good factor back into mix.

i agree with a few peoples views. pepper was right breach is better then ryman south but i think he found his peak a bss only because his legs arnt fast enough. Breach was man of the season last year and has passion for the club. his arguement with winnie in the last home game of the season showed his frustration.
i also wonder whether barness can perform for another season? if he has the legs then sign him up! been a good servant who didnt vanish after our ill-fated promotion
Winnie will be replaced with ease by king so i feel indifferent on the matter, though i do think he has a future higher up the leagues then he finds himself just not with lewes.
hill and hunt looked very good but could have done with a bit more service by a better team. but Danny buckle looked like bambi on ice but as it has been said. he set up more opportunities in 10 mins then the rest of the team in 90. i dont think i would personally sign him but he did put in effort unlike some of the other loanees we had last season.
i feel slightly disappointed for pearson as i believed was a good player and wasnt given the time of day by tosh. and with our signings and the view to sign breach its looking bleak. it still shocks me that tosh was even a manager at this level, he was clearly out of his depth, not saying im a quality manager but come on, it looked as if tosh learnt his managerial ability from Football manager the same master class keehan graduated from.

Re Squawker's final paragraph. I read that both Tosh and Neil Smith were seen at Bromley a few weeks ago. Yet only Smith has come away with a job. Have they gone their separate ways?

So much for looking to the future.......
We should be discussing the possible signings, the potential away 'day' weekends and the price of beer, not what went on last season. Give it a rest.
