:DWhilst this forum naturally abounds in speculation about who the new manager will be I thought it would be timely to put in a ‘thank you’ or two to some volunteers who’ve done sterling work for the club in recent months. The danger in doing this is that not everyone will get a mention but if anyone thinks I’ve missed someone who deserves acknowledgement please feel free add to the thread.
Earlier this year it was identified that certain work had to be undertaken and completed without fail by the end of March in order to maintain the Dripping Pan’s ‘B’ grading under FA Rules. One of the new rules was that we had to have a first aid room available to the public on match days. Sharing a room used by the players was not allowed. Further, the room had to have running mains water and a sink. A solution was identified in the shape of one of the big ugly metal containers up behind the Philcox Stand. It was in terrible condition and needed extensive conversion work. Step in roofing specialist Richard Soan who kindly arranged for fixing the roof of the container and also made it waterproof. Next to volunteer was Andy Black and his wife Lisa. Now Andy came to the Dripping Pan as a working steward but Lee Cobb tells me he was quite taken with the Lewes FC experience and had volunteered to help out wherever he could. Well it turns out he is highly skilled handyman who was able to renovate the interior of the container, plumb in the water and into the bargain even fix a sink that was required for the First Team’s Physio Room. A brilliant contribution deserving of our thanks.
We also have a Board with members willing to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in. Charlie Dobres was the driving force behind the 125th Anniversary Gala Dinner held at the Pelham House Hotel a few weeks back. A great night that I do believe raised something like £8000 for Lewes FC. I’m also sure that news will soon break on the official site about an exciting new sponsorship deal in respect of the club’s ‘kids go free’ policy – this too has been personally brokered by a Director.
The Supporters Club have been busy too. And because the Supporters Club raises money from you, the fans, that means you’ve been doing your bit. At the request of the Board, amongst other things the Supporters Club donated £1000 to fund a new automatic sprinkler for the Dripping Pan pitch. In the recent hot weather it’s been hard at work and is already proving a tremendous boon, much to the delight of Groundsman Roger.
The sprinkler is bringing the new season’s Dripping Pan grass to life. But before it could go into action there was a tremendous amount of work required to ‘scarify’ the surface and prepare it for re-seeding. This work was undertaken totally free of charge by Kevin Fingerneissl and his sons and workcrew. Kevin brought in the necessary tractor and specialist equipment, tons of fresh soil to spread over the Dripping Pan and gawd knows what else. Another brilliant effort.
As I said at the outset, I have only highlighted some of the many recent good works undertaken by volunteers that I am aware of. I am sure there are plenty more things going on with so far unsung heroes. But I hope my posting goes to show just how much commitment and effort we have behind the Mighty Rooks. Whoever the new manager may be I hope he notices this posting and can appreciate the faith so many fans have in Lewes FC and how much they are prepared to put into ensuring the future of this great club.
Finally, let me say that you can never have too many volunteers so if anyone reading this thinks they have a skill or just pure enthusiasm to put at the disposal of the Rooks please do not hesitate to step forward.
